This poem was inspired by my nearly twenty-five years of experience in elementary and middle school education. The poem begins with outside distractions, but escalates until the student is creating his or her own distractions. The attention span gets shorter as the day goes on, and the diversions (and excuses) get longer. It isn’t something that most easily distracted students can control on their own. I – have – seen – it – all. Fortunately, I find it all quite entertaining.
