This was the most difficult poem I have ever written. My writing doesn’t usually involve so many shed tears. Though I have not personally experienced the loss of a spouse, I have shared such loss with many friends and family members. Losing a loved one is the most dreadful thing we must face in this life. It is a fear that haunts most of us. I am still working on trusting in the words of Christ, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27) Watching a loved one gradually slip away due to a debilitating disease must be beyond painful. My prayers are with all of you who are facing such heartbreak.
